Nook Collective

Code of Conduct

These expectations apply across the whole Collective — every club, every discussion thread, every virtual and in-person event. They're how we keep the Nook warm.

01Everyone belongs at the table

Nook Collective is a literary arts and cultural hub. We welcome readers of every background, culture, identity, ability and experience level. Discrimination, harassment, or exclusion of any kind has no place here — online, in clubs, or at events.

02Debate the book, respect the reader

Lively disagreement about ideas, writing and themes is the point of a book club. Critique the work, never the person. Personal attacks, dismissive language, or mocking someone's taste ends the conversation we came for.

03Honour the spoiler zones

Some members read fast, some savour. Keep plot reveals out of spoiler-free spaces — first-impressions threads and early meetups — until everyone has had the chance to catch up. When in doubt, ask before you reveal.

04Share the air

In discussions and at meetups, make room for quieter voices. If you've spoken a lot, invite someone else in. If you're usually quiet, your take is wanted — there is no wrong way to have read the book.

05Consent and comfort at events

Events at local cafés and partner venues follow the same standards as our online spaces. Respect physical boundaries, venue rules and staff. Photography or sharing someone's words outside the group needs their permission first.

06No selling, no spam

Recommend books you love — including your own, once, when it's relevant. But the Collective is not a marketplace: no repeated self-promotion, solicitations, or unrelated advertising in discussions or at events.

07When something goes wrong

If you experience or witness behaviour that breaks this code, tell a club host or email the organizers. Reports are taken seriously and handled confidentially. Depending on severity, consequences range from a conversation to removal from the Collective.

By joining a Nook Collective club or event, you're agreeing to these expectations. Questions or concerns? Reach out to your club host — we're readers first, and we're glad you're here.
